What is French drainage?

A French drain is a type of land drainage system that collects water and redirects it away from an area. It typically consists of a trench dug to a designed fall, a perforated pipe where required, clean drainage aggregate, a geotextile membrane to reduce silt getting in, and a suitable discharge point, such as a soakaway, surface water system, or other approved outlet.

French drains are commonly used to manage groundwater and surface water around buildings, hardstanding, and landscaped areas.

What is land drainage?

Land drainage is the broader term for systems that control excess water in the ground and on the surface. Depending on the site, this can include French drains, perforated land drain runs, catch pits and silt traps, soakaways and infiltration systems, channel drains and surface water collection, and re-grading to improve falls and prevent pooling.

The right approach depends on ground conditions, where the water is coming from, and where it can legally and safely be discharged.

When French drains and land drains are needed

Land drainage is often needed when you're experiencing:

Land drainage should be designed properly, not guessed at.

1) Site assessment

We assess where the water is coming from, whether that's surface runoff or groundwater, the ground levels and falls, the soil type and how well it drains, existing drainage routes and discharge points, and any constraints such as utilities, access, or trading hours.

2) Practical recommendations

We recommend the most effective solution, which might be a French drain run to intercept groundwater, additional surface water collection points, silt traps or catch pits to reduce future maintenance, a soakaway installation where suitable, or repairs to existing land drains that have collapsed or silted up.

3) Installation and reinstatement

We install with longevity and maintenance access in mind, using the correct falls and pipework, a suitable membrane and aggregate, proper connections and discharge arrangements, and sensible reinstatement of surfaces or landscaping where agreed.

Repairs to existing land drains

Not every site needs a brand-new system.
