When a road gully or drainage gully can't take water away fast enough, you end up with standing water, slip hazards, disrupted deliveries, and sometimes water getting into buildings.

What is a road gully?

A road gully is a surface water collection point typically found on roads, car parks, and hardstanding areas. It captures runoff and directs it into the surface water drainage system. Most road gullies include a gully grate at surface level, a gully pot or sump beneath it that collects silt and debris, and an outlet connection into the drainage line.

When the sump fills with silt, or the outlet becomes restricted, the gully stops working properly.

What is a drainage gully?

A drainage gully is a broader term covering the various gully types used around buildings and external areas, including yard gullies, car park gullies, courtyard gullies, and back-of-house service area gullies. They all perform the same essential job: collecting surface water and preventing flooding.

Common problems with gullies

Gullies tend to fail for a few predictable reasons:

Silt and debris build-up in the gully pot
Blocked outlet connections, often from silt, leaves, or litter
Damaged grates or frames creating safety hazards
Poor falls causing water to bypass the gully
Gullies that are undersized or poorly located for the catchment area

These issues can lead to standing water and slip risk, flooding in car parks, loading bays, and walkways, water tracking into entrances and internal areas, and higher maintenance costs from repeat call-outs.

When to call us for gully works

You should consider gully maintenance or repair if you notice water pooling around gully locations, gullies overflowing during rainfall, slow drainage on hardstanding, bad odours from stagnant water and debris, broken or rocking grates, or the same surface water issue happening in the same spot repeatedly.

If the gully sits on a live operational area, such as a delivery route or customer access point, it's worth addressing early.

We remove silt, debris, and blockages, jet connecting pipework where required, and recommend changes to reduce repeat silting.

Repairs and replacements

We repair damaged frames and grates, replace broken covers and grates for safety compliance, resolve outlet restrictions and connection issues, and rebuild gully surrounds where they've failed.

New gully installation and upgrades

Where existing drainage is inadequate, we can install new gullies or upgrade existing ones to improve capture and reduce flooding. This is particularly useful for car parks that regularly flood, service yards with heavy runoff, and sites where the use has changed, for example more hardstanding or more roof runoff.

Protecting downstream drainage

If your gullies are constantly silting up, the wider system may need better interception. We often recommend catch pits or silt traps upstream or along long runs, improved maintenance schedules, and better debris control in areas with a lot of leaf litter. This helps protect soakaways, attenuation tanks, and surface water pipework further down the line.
