Root-Damaged Pipe Repairs
Tree roots don't just block a drain, they damage it. By the time roots have forced their way through a joint or crack, they've usually widened the defect, and simply cutting the roots back leaves that damage behind to cause the same problem again.
ICE Drainage repairs root-damaged pipes for homeowners, businesses, and facilities teams across the UK. We remove the roots, repair the underlying damage, and help you stop it coming back.
How roots damage a drain
Roots enter through existing weak points, usually a crack, a displaced joint, or a poor connection. Once inside, they don't just sit there. As they grow, they can widen the original crack or gap they entered through, force joints further apart, create a rough surface inside the pipe that catches debris and worsens blockages, and leave the pipe structurally weaker even after the roots themselves are removed.
This is why root removal on its own is often a short-term fix. If the entry point isn't repaired, more roots will find their way back in.
Signs of root damage
- A CCTV survey has identified root ingress at a joint or crack
- Blockages at the same point in the drain that return after clearing
- Slow drainage that's gradually got worse over time
- A known history of roots being cut back at the same location before
Our root damage repair process
1) Removing the roots
We clear the root mass from the pipe first, using the most appropriate method for the location and severity, so we can properly assess the damage underneath.
2) Confirming the damage
We use CCTV to inspect the entry point and confirm exactly what's been affected, whether that's a cracked pipe wall, a displaced joint, or a wider structural issue.
3) Repairing the defect
Depending on what we find, this might mean joint sealing, a localised resin patch repair, a lining repair, or, in more severe cases, replacement of the affected section, so the entry point the roots used is properly closed off.
4) Preventing recurrence
Where useful, we can recommend a planned maintenance interval to catch any regrowth early, before it causes another blockage.
Why repairing the damage matters, not just the roots
Cutting roots back without fixing what let them in is treating the symptom, not the cause. Repairing the actual defect is what stops the cycle of recurring blockages at the same spot on your drain.
