Ground & Surface Reinstatement
Excavation is only half the job. Once a drain has been repaired, replaced, or diverted, the ground above it needs to be put back properly, not just filled in and left. A poor reinstatement can sink, crack, or look obviously patched for years afterwards.
ICE Drainage carries out ground and surface reinstatement after excavation and repair work for homeowners, businesses, and facilities teams across the UK. We make good the surface to match what was there before, so the finished job looks right and lasts.
What reinstatement involves
Reinstatement is the work needed to restore a surface after it's been dug up for drainage repairs, replacement, or diversion work. Depending on what's above the drain, this can include:
- Backfilling and properly compacting the excavation to prevent future sinking
- Relaying block paving, flags, or slabs to match the surrounding area
- Resurfacing tarmac or concrete driveways, paths, and car parks
- Reinstating lawns, borders, and other garden areas
- Making good internal flooring where a repair has required access from inside a building
- Restoring kerbs, edging, and any other surface features disturbed by the work
Why proper reinstatement matters
A repair that's finished well below ground but poorly above it isn't really finished. Getting the reinstatement right matters because:
- Poorly compacted backfill leads to sinking or a visible dip over time
- Mismatched materials or patching stand out and can affect your property's appearance
- A weak surface over the excavation can become a trip hazard or crack under vehicle weight
- Getting it right first time avoids a second visit and further disruption
Our reinstatement process
1) Assessing the surface
Before we start any excavation, we note the existing surface, its materials, and how it should look once the work is finished.
2) Backfilling correctly
We backfill in layers and compact properly as we go, rather than filling the hole in one go, which is one of the most common causes of later sinking.
3) Matching the surface
We reinstate using materials that match the surrounding area as closely as possible, whether that's block paving, tarmac, concrete, turf, or flooring.
4) Final check
We check the finished surface is level, stable, and free of any obvious signs of the work that's just been done underneath it.
Reinstatement after any drainage work
We provide reinstatement as part of collapsed drain repairs, cracked or displaced pipe repairs, pipework alterations and diversions, manhole repairs, and new drainage installation. If your project involves excavation, reinstatement is built into the job, not treated as an afterthought.
