What is waste transport and disposal documentation?

It's the set of records that tracks waste from the moment it's produced to the moment it's received and processed by a licensed facility. Depending on the waste type, quantity, and classification, this can include Waste Transfer Notes, Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes where they apply, waste classification and European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes, carrier registration details, disposal site permits and acceptance records, weighbridge tickets where provided, and Duty of Care statements and audit-ready summaries.

For a lot of organisations, this paperwork is essential for internal compliance, ISO management systems, contractor control, and environmental audits.

Why waste documentation matters

Under UK waste regulations, businesses have a legal Duty of Care. That means making sure any waste you produce is stored safely and securely, described accurately, handed only to an authorised person (a registered waste carrier), taken to an authorised facility, and documented correctly.

Waste Transfer Notes

A proper WTN includes a clear description of the waste, how much there is and how it's contained, the time and place of the transfer, details of the waste producer (your site), details of the waste carrier, details of the receiving facility, and signatures confirming the transfer.

Hazardous waste documentation

Some drainage waste can end up classed as hazardous, depending on contamination levels and what's in it. Where that applies, a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note may be needed.
