Root Removal (Emergency)

Tree roots in drains can cause sudden blockages, repeat flooding, bad odours, and even structural damage to pipework. If you've got an urgent back-up, an overflowing manhole, or repeated blockages, you may need emergency root removal to get the system flowing again.

ICE Drainage provides rapid emergency root removal across London and the Home Counties, helping commercial and residential sites clear root ingress safely and restore drainage performance.

How do roots get into drains?

Roots naturally seek out moisture and nutrients. Even small cracks, displaced joints, or weak seals in underground pipework can let fine roots in. Over time, those roots thicken and form a dense mass that catches wipes, fats, silt, and debris, leading to a blockage.

Root ingress is common in older clay pipe systems, properties near mature trees or hedgerows, lines with historic movement or poor joints, and long runs serving multiple buildings, which is common on commercial sites.

Signs you need emergency root removal

Root-related blockages can build up gradually, then fail suddenly. Call for emergency support if you notice toilets, sinks, or floor drains backing up, gurgling sounds and slow drainage across multiple outlets, overflowing manholes or external flooding, repeat blockages that return soon after unblocking, bad odours that won't go away, or flooding after rainfall caused by roots and silt restricting flow.

If foul water is involved, keep people away from the area and call ICE Drainage.

Why root blockages are different, and why they come back

A standard unblock can restore flow temporarily, but if roots remain in the line, the problem often returns. Roots catch debris and create a net inside the pipe, reduce the pipe diameter and restrict flow, can force joints apart and worsen cracks, and cause recurring blockages and repeated call-outs.

Emergency root removal focuses on removing the root mass, then identifying why it got in, so you can prevent it happening again.

Our emergency root removal process

Every site is different, but our approach is designed to restore flow fast and reduce the chance of it recurring.

We start with an urgent assessment, gathering details on symptoms, access points, flooding level, and site type, and prioritising safe containment if there's foul water. We then clear the blockage and stabilise the site, restoring flow using the most appropriate method for the pipe type and severity, followed by root cutting and removal to reopen the line and reduce snag points.

If the issue is recurring or high-risk, we recommend a CCTV inspection to confirm the root entry point, the pipe condition, including cracks, displaced joints, or collapses, and the extent of the root ingress. We finish with recommendations to prevent repeat issues, covering repairs, lining, or maintenance to reduce the chance of roots coming back.

Emergency root removal for commercial and hospitality sites

For hospitality and commercial sites, drainage downtime can mean closures, hygiene risks, and reputational damage. We support restaurants and commercial kitchens, hotels and serviced apartments, pubs and bars, retail and office premises, schools, public buildings, and managed estates, and facilities managers and multi-site operators.

We'll work to minimise disruption and help you get back to normal operations quickly.

Preventing roots from blocking your drains again

Root removal fixes the immediate blockage, but long-term prevention depends on addressing the entry point. Depending on what we find, prevention may include a CCTV drain survey to locate root ingress and pipe defects, targeted repairs such as joint or patch repairs, drain lining to seal cracks and joints where suitable, a planned maintenance programme for high-risk sites, and routine jetting and cleaning to reduce the debris that roots catch onto.

If you manage multiple sites, ask about planned preventative maintenance to reduce emergency call-outs.

What to do if you suspect roots are blocking your drain

If you're dealing with an urgent blockage right now:

  • Stop using sinks or toilets if water levels are rising
  • Keep people away from any foul water
  • If it's safe to do so, isolate electrics in affected areas
  • Take photos or video for your records or insurance, if it's safe to do so
  • Call ICE Drainage for emergency root removal

Avoid pouring chemicals down the drain. They won't remove roots and can create additional hazards.
