Sewage & Effluent Removal
Sewage and effluent incidents can shut a site down fast. Whether it's a blocked drain causing sewage to back up, a flooded plant room, a failed pump station, or a tank that's reached capacity, you need a response that's safe, controlled, and compliant.
ICE Drainage provides professional sewage and effluent removal across the UK for commercial, industrial, and domestic sites. Using specialist vacuum tankers and controlled waste handling, we remove waste safely, keep disruption to a minimum, and provide the right waste transfer documentation to support your Duty of Care.
What is sewage, and what is effluent?
The two terms often get used together, but they can mean different things depending on the site.
Sewage is wastewater carrying human waste and contaminants from toilets and internal drainage. Effluent is liquid waste discharged from a process or system, which might include greywater, trade effluent, or wastewater from industrial processes.
Both come with real hygiene and environmental risks, so they need to be removed, transported, and disposed of correctly.
When you might need sewage and effluent removal
We support planned and emergency removal for a wide range of situations, including sewage backing up into toilets, sinks, or internal drainage, flooded basements, plant rooms, service risers, or underground areas, pump station failure or rising main issues, an interceptor, tank, or holding system reaching capacity, construction sites and welfare units needing waste removal, trade effluent build-up where storage and removal is required, and a site at risk of shutting down due to odour, contamination, or disruption.
If you're not sure what waste stream you're dealing with, we can help you identify it and confirm the right approach.
Why fast, compliant removal matters
Sewage and effluent aren't just unpleasant, they're a genuine safety and operational risk.
Acting quickly helps stop contamination spreading across floors, surfaces, and drainage runs, cuts slip hazards and exposure risk for staff and the public, keeps odour and reputational damage to a minimum, especially on customer-facing sites, reduces downtime and protects critical infrastructure, supports environmental protection by preventing overflow or uncontrolled discharge, and makes sure waste is documented and disposed of correctly.
For commercial sites, the cost of disruption is usually higher than the cost of planned prevention.
Our sewage and effluent removal process
We follow a structured, site-safe approach.
1) Rapid assessment and containment
We confirm the affected area, access, and any immediate risks. Where needed, we'll advise on steps to stop things getting worse, like restricting water use or isolating a failed system.
2) Safe set-up and hygiene controls
We put the right controls in place to protect the working area, reduce cross-contamination, and keep the site running where we can.
3) Vacuum extraction and tanker removal
Using specialist vacuum tankers and pumps, we remove sewage or effluent safely and efficiently, in a controlled way designed to keep odour and spillage to a minimum.
4) Basic checks and issue flagging
Where practical, we carry out visual checks and flag likely causes, such as blockages and restricted flow, pump station faults, a tank that's outgrown its capacity, structural issues with covers, chambers, or access points, or signs of repeated surcharge or backflow. If further drainage work is needed, like jetting, a CCTV survey, or repairs, we'll recommend clear next steps.
5) Waste transport and documentation
Sewage and effluent are controlled wastes and have to be handled correctly. We provide waste transfer documentation where applicable, supporting your Duty of Care and internal compliance.
Planned sewage and effluent removal
A lot of sites benefit from a planned removal programme rather than waiting for an emergency. This tends to suit sites with holding tanks or off-mains systems, interceptors and containment systems that need periodic emptying, construction compounds and temporary welfare facilities, and industrial or commercial sites with predictable waste volumes.
Planned servicing helps reduce emergency call-outs, improve budgeting and keep operations running smoothly, maintain consistent hygiene standards, and keep an audit trail of waste removal and disposal.
Sewage and effluent removal for commercial and industrial sites
We support a wide range of sectors, including facilities management and managing agents, warehouses, depots, and logistics sites, construction and infrastructure projects, hospitality and leisure, public sector and education, and industrial and manufacturing environments.
If your organisation needs contractor governance, RAMS, permits, or audit-ready documentation, we can support those requirements too.
Compliance and waste documentation
Getting the documentation right matters, especially for commercial and industrial sites. We support compliance through Waste Transfer Notes where applicable, clear waste descriptions that match the waste stream, and controlled waste handling with documented disposal routes.
This supports your Duty of Care obligations and helps keep your records audit-ready.
