Sampling & Compliance Inspections

Sampling & Compliance Inspections

Sampling and compliance inspections are critical for sites that operate interceptors and separators  especially where theres a risk of pollution, trade effluent breaches, or enforcement action.

If you manage a commercial site with a grease separator, petrol/oil interceptor, silt trap, bunded area, or trade effluent discharge, youre likely expected to demonstrate that your system is functioning correctly and that discharges meet required standards.

At ICE Drainage, we carry out sampling and compliance inspections for hospitality, facilities management, industrial and commercial sites. We help you understand whats happening in your system, identify issues early, and create clear, auditable records.

Sampling & compliance inspections for interceptors and separators

Interceptors and separators are designed to protect the drainage network and the environment by capturing contaminants before they leave site. But if theyre poorly maintained, incorrectly sized, or damaged, they can:

  • Allow pollutants to pass into the sewer or surface water system
  • Trigger odour issues and blockages
  • Fail inspections from landlords, insurers, or environmental teams
  • Create costly emergency clean-ups and reputational risk

Sampling and inspections give you evidence of performance and help you stay ahead of problems.

What are compliance inspections?

A compliance inspection is a structured assessment of your interceptor/separator system, typically including:

  • Visual checks of chambers, covers, seals and access
  • Assessment of contents (oil layer, silt level, grease build-up)
  • Checks for signs of bypass, damage, or poor flow
  • Review of maintenance history and servicing intervals
  • Identification of risks (pollution, overflow, blockage, structural failure)

Where required, we also support sampling to provide objective data on whats being discharged.

What is sampling (and why does it matter)?

Sampling is the collection of wastewater or interceptor contents for analysis. It can be used to:

  • Confirm whether discharge quality is within expected limits
  • Identify contamination (oil, grease, suspended solids, unusual odours/colour)
  • Support investigations after an incident or complaint
  • Provide evidence for internal audits or FM reporting
  • Inform maintenance frequency and system upgrades

Sampling is particularly useful when a site has repeat issues, unclear maintenance history, or a requirement to demonstrate control of trade effluent risks.

When should you book sampling & compliance inspections?

You should consider booking an inspection if:

  • Youre onboarding a new site and need to understand asset condition
  • Youve had a pollution incident, odour complaint, or enforcement concern
  • Your interceptor/separator hasnt been serviced consistently
  • Youre preparing for an audit, landlord inspection, or handover
  • You manage multiple sites and need standardised reporting
  • You suspect bypass, damage, or undersizing
  • Youve had repeated blockages downstream of an interceptor

If youre unsure, we can advise on the most practical inspection approach based on your asset type and site layout.

Our sampling & compliance inspection process

We keep our approach practical and site-friendly, while ensuring you get clear outcomes.

1) Site review & asset identification

We confirm what systems are in place and how they connect into your drainage network, such as:

  • Grease separators (hospitality kitchens)
  • Petrol/oil interceptors (car parks, workshops, forecourts)
  • Silt traps and catchpits
  • Trade effluent lines and discharge points
  • Bunded wash-down areas

2) Visual inspection and condition assessment

We inspect chambers and components for:

  • Oil/grease layer thickness
  • Silt accumulation and reduced capacity
  • Signs of corrosion, cracking, or structural defects
  • Blocked inlet/outlet points
  • Evidence of bypass or poor separation
  • Odour issues and likely causes

3) Sampling (where required)

Where sampling is appropriate, we collect samples safely and consistently to support analysis and reporting.

4) Findings, recommendations and next steps

Youll receive clear recommendations, which may include:

  • Emptying and cleaning / tanker attendance
  • Increased servicing frequency (PPM)
  • Repairs to chambers, covers, seals or pipework
  • Upgrades or replacement due to undersizing or poor performance
  • Drain cleaning or investigations downstream (e.g., jetting, CCTV survey)

5) Reporting for FM and compliance records

We provide clear documentation suitable for:

  • Facilities management reporting
  • Landlord / managing agent requirements
  • Internal audits and site handovers
  • Incident investigations and corrective action plans

Interceptors & separators we commonly inspect

We support a wide range of systems, including:

  • Grease separators for commercial kitchens
  • Petrol/oil interceptors for car parks, depots, workshops and forecourts
  • Silt traps and catchpits for yards and external drainage
  • Wash bay interceptors for fleet and industrial sites
  • Multi-tenant systems where multiple units discharge into shared interceptors

If youre not sure what you have on site, we can help identify assets and map the likely flow routes.

Planned compliance support (PPM)

For many sites, the best approach is combining inspections with planned maintenance.

We can build a programme that includes:

  • Scheduled inspections and condition checks
  • Routine emptying and cleaning
  • Photographic evidence and service reporting
  • Escalation support for reactive issues
  • Recommendations for upgrades and lifecycle planning

This is particularly useful for facilities management providers and multi-site operators who need consistent standards and predictable costs.

Why choose ICE Drainage?

Compliance isnt just about paperwork its about preventing incidents and keeping sites operational.

With ICE Drainage, you get:

  • Commercial-first approach for live sites
  • Engineers experienced in interceptors, separators and drainage investigations
  • Clear reporting suitable for FM and audit trails
  • Ability to deliver follow-on works (tanker services, jetting, CCTV, repairs)
  • Support for multi-site programmes

Sampling & compliance inspections FAQs

Do you only work with hospitality sites?

No. While were strong in hospitality, we also support commercial, industrial and facilities-managed sites with interceptors and separators.

Can you help if weve had a pollution incident?

Yes. We can attend to assess the system, identify likely causes (overflow, bypass, lack of maintenance), and recommend corrective actions.

Do you provide ongoing maintenance after inspections?

Yes. We can set up planned servicing and inspections as part of a wider PPM programme.

Book sampling & compliance inspections

If you need sampling, compliance inspections, or a clearer picture of how your interceptor/separator system is performing, well help you reduce risk and keep your drainage under control.
