Remote-Controlled Cutting & Milling

Some drainage blockages and restrictions can't be cleared properly with standard jetting alone. When you're dealing with heavy deposits, concrete ingress, scale build-up, roots, or structural obstructions, you often need specialist cutting and milling equipment to restore the pipe's internal diameter and get the system flowing again.

ICE Drainage provides remote-controlled cutting and milling across London and the Home Counties, supporting facilities management teams, property managers, hospitality groups, industrial sites, and multi-tenant commercial buildings.

What is remote-controlled cutting and milling?

Remote-controlled cutting and milling uses specialist robotic equipment that's inserted into the drainage line through an access point, typically a manhole or chamber. The unit is operated from the surface, allowing controlled removal of concrete and grout, heavy scale and deposits, fat, oil, and grease build-up depending on the site, tree roots and root masses, intruding connections and protruding laterals, deformed liners or snag points, and debris and obstructions that resist jetting.

This approach is particularly valuable on commercial sites where downtime, flooding risk, and repeated call-outs are costly.

When cutting and milling is the right solution

Remote-controlled cutting and milling is commonly used when jetting clears the line temporarily but the blockage keeps returning, a CCTV survey shows a fixed obstruction or heavy build-up, the pipe has lost effective diameter due to deposits, there's evidence of construction debris or concrete ingress, root ingress is causing repeated restrictions, or you need a controlled way to remove a snag point without excavating.

It's often the difference between repeated reactive call-outs and a long-term fix.

Common problems we resolve

Concrete, grout, and construction debris

On commercial refurbishments, fit-outs, and external works, it's not uncommon for concrete or grout to get into the drainage network. Once it sets, it can create hard restrictions, snag points that catch wipes and debris, and reduced capacity that leads to surcharging. Milling lets us remove these deposits and restore flow.

Heavy scale, deposits, and diameter loss

Over time, some lines develop heavy internal build-up that reduces capacity, contributing to slow drainage, frequent blockages, and poor performance during peak usage or storms. Cutting and milling restores internal diameter and improves reliability.

Root ingress and root masses

Where roots have entered through joints or defects, they create a persistent restriction. Cutting removes root masses and helps restore flow, often as part of a wider plan that may include a CCTV investigation, targeted repairs, and an ongoing maintenance interval.

Intruding connections and snag points

Protruding laterals or poorly finished connections can catch debris and trigger recurring blockages. Robotic cutting removes the obstruction and smooths out the flow path.

Our remote-controlled cutting and milling process

We keep the process practical and evidence-led, with clear communication for FM and property teams.

1) Access planning and site set-up

We identify suitable access points and plan safe working arrangements. On live commercial sites, this may include out-of-hours working, traffic management around chambers, and coordination with site teams and tenants.

2) CCTV survey

If the cause isn't already confirmed, we may recommend a CCTV survey to locate the restriction, confirm pipe diameter and material, identify defects, root ingress, or structural issues, and plan the correct cutting or milling approach.

3) Remote cutting and milling

We deploy the robotic unit and remove the obstruction in a controlled way, working to restore the pipe's effective diameter.

4) Clearance and flush

Once cutting or milling is complete, we flush and clear the line to remove debris and confirm the flow is free.

5) Post-works evidence and recommendations

Where appropriate, we provide before and after observations, recommendations for repairs if any defects are present, and suggested maintenance intervals to prevent the problem coming back.

Planned preventative maintenance and recurring issues

Remote-controlled cutting and milling is often used as part of a wider maintenance strategy, especially for hospitality sites with high grease risk, multi-tenant buildings with variable usage, older networks with historic deposits, and sites with repeated blockages at known pinch points. Once the line is restored, a sensible planned maintenance schedule of jetting, inspections, and targeted cleans helps keep it that way.

Remote cutting and milling for facilities management

FM teams typically need a clear diagnosis of what's causing the issue, a controlled solution with minimal disruption, and evidence for approvals and stakeholder updates. We support this with practical planning, out-of-hours options, and clear reporting.
