What is a culvert?

A culvert is a structure that lets water flow under an obstacle such as a road, driveway, railway, or embankment. Culverts commonly carry surface water runoff, streams and watercourses, and drainage ditch flows, and can be built from concrete, brick, plastic, or metal.

Because culverts are designed to move water efficiently, any restriction causes water to back up and flood upstream.

Why culverts block

Culverts typically become restricted due to silt and sediment build-up, leaves, branches, and organic debris, litter and fly-tipped waste, collapsed or displaced sections, root ingress, or debris washed in during storms. On commercial sites, they can also be affected by construction debris, landscaping runoff, and poor upstream silt control.

We clear debris and obstructions at the culvert entrance and exit to restore flow immediately where possible.

3) Culvert cleaning and clearance

Depending on the culvert type and condition, cleaning can include removing silt and sediment build-up, clearing organic debris and blockages, and flushing and cleaning associated pipework.

4) Inspection and condition observations

Where appropriate, we check for signs of collapse, displacement, or damage, root ingress and recurring restriction points, and whether the upstream silt control is doing its job. If we suspect any defects, we'll recommend further investigation and remedial options.

5) Findings and recommendations
