What is a French drain?
A French drain is a trench that collects water and carries it away from the area you're trying to protect. A properly built one has:
- A trench dug to a precise fall, so water actually moves instead of sitting still
- A perforated pipe, where the site needs one
- Clean drainage aggregate (gravel) packed around the pipe
- A geotextile membrane, which stops fine silt clogging the system up
- A discharge point — a soakaway, the surface water system, or another approved outlet
Water seeps through the gravel, drops into the perforated pipe, and flows away to wherever it's been directed. It's not complicated, but every part of it has to be right for it to keep working.
