Bench & Channel Repairs
Inside every manhole, a sloped concrete shelf called the benching guides waste along a shaped channel at the base, keeping it moving smoothly to the next section of pipe. When the benching or channel is cracked, worn, or poorly built, solids catch on the rough surface instead of flowing through, and that's when blockages and bad smells start.
ICE Drainage repairs damaged bench and channel work in manholes and inspection chambers for homeowners, businesses, and facilities teams across the UK. We rebuild the benching and channel properly, so flow is restored and the problem doesn't just come back.
What is bench and channel damage?
The benching is the sloped concrete surface either side of the channel at the bottom of a manhole. The channel is the shaped groove that carries flow through the chamber. Together, they're designed to keep waste moving without pooling or snagging.
Common problems include:
- Cracked or crumbling benching, often from age or ground movement
- A channel that's too shallow, too wide, or poorly shaped, so solids don't clear properly
- Benching built with the wrong fall, letting waste sit rather than flow through
- Erosion or wear from years of flow, leaving a rough or uneven surface
- Damage caused by root ingress or a nearby structural defect
Signs your bench or channel needs repair
You may have a bench or channel problem if you're noticing:
- Recurring blockages at the same manhole, despite regular clearing
- Bad odours coming from a specific chamber
- Solids or debris visibly caught on the benching when the cover is lifted
- Slow drainage through a section that should be flowing freely
- Standing water sitting in the chamber rather than moving through
Our bench and channel repair process
1) Inspection
We open the chamber and inspect the benching and channel directly, or use CCTV where access is limited, to confirm the extent of the damage and what's causing it.
2) Preparation
We clean the chamber and remove any loose or damaged material, so the repair has a solid surface to bond to.
3) Rebuilding the benching and channel
We rebuild the benching to the correct fall and reshape the channel so it guides flow smoothly through the chamber, using materials suited to the chamber's condition and use.
4) Testing
We confirm the repaired chamber is flowing correctly before finishing up, so you know the fix has worked.
Why proper repair matters
A quick patch that doesn't restore the correct shape and fall will usually fail again within months. Getting the benching and channel right the first time stops the blockage returning, reduces the odours that come with standing waste, and protects the rest of the drainage run from repeat call-outs.
