Some drainage and sewage work can't be done safely from the surface. When you need access inside chambers, manholes, pump stations, tanks, or other restricted areas, confined space entry is essential.

What is confined space entry?

A confined space is an enclosed or partially enclosed area that isn't designed for people to be in continuously, has limited ways in or out, and may contain hazards such as toxic gases, low oxygen, or a flooding risk.

In drainage and sewage environments, confined spaces commonly include manholes and inspection chambers, wet wells and pump chambers, interceptors and tanks, deep valve chambers, culverts and service voids, and treatment plant chambers.

Because these environments can be hazardous, entering them has to be properly planned and controlled.

Why confined space entry matters in drainage work

Drainage and sewage confined spaces can involve serious risks, including hazardous atmospheres such as hydrogen sulphide and other gases, oxygen depletion, sudden inflow or flooding, biological hazards, slips and trips in restricted movement, and manual handling in tight spaces.

A proper confined space approach protects people, reduces operational risk, and supports compliance for whoever holds responsibility for the site.

When confined space entry is required

Confined space entry is often needed for pump station wet well cleaning, pump and valve inspections, removing debris and blockages from inside chambers, maintenance inside tanks or interceptors, repairs to internal pipework or fittings, installing or replacing components where surface access isn't possible, and investigations where a visual inspection is needed from inside.

If a job can't be completed safely from the surface, confined space entry is likely the correct method.

Our confined space entry approach

1) Site assessment and planning

We review the scope and confirm the confined space classification and hazards, access and escape points, isolation requirements for flows, electrical, or mechanical systems, any site-specific permits and inductions, and scheduling needs, including out-of-hours where required.

2) Risk assessment, method statement, and rescue planning

Confined space work needs a documented plan. We support safe delivery with a risk assessment and method statement, a rescue plan matched to the site and access conditions, and permit-to-work coordination where required.

3) Atmospheric monitoring and ventilation

Before and during entry, we use appropriate controls such as gas monitoring, ventilation where required, and continuous monitoring throughout the work.

4) Controlled entry and task delivery

Once safe entry is confirmed, we carry out the agreed work. Typical drainage tasks include cleaning and removing debris or silt, inspecting internal components, minor maintenance and preparation for repairs, and support for pump and mechanical work.

5) Reporting and evidence for FM teams

For commercial clients, we can provide a clear summary of the work completed, observations and risks identified, and recommendations for next steps, such as a CCTV survey, repairs, or a maintenance interval.
