Water & Flow Testing

When drainage problems are intermittent, it's easy to waste time and money on guesswork. Water and flow testing helps you prove how your drainage system behaves under real conditions, so you can pinpoint restrictions, confirm connectivity, and identify where capacity issues, defects, or misconnections are causing trouble.

ICE Drainage provides water and flow testing across London and the Home Counties, supporting hospitality venues, commercial sites, facilities management teams, property managers, and multi-tenant buildings.

What is water and flow testing?

Water and flow testing is a practical investigation method used to assess whether a drainage run is flowing correctly, how quickly water clears or where it backs up, whether there are restrictions, partial blockages, or poor gradients, whether a drain connects where it's supposed to, and how the system behaves during higher demand, such as peak operational periods.

It's particularly useful on commercial sites where multiple waste streams exist, such as kitchens, WCs, wash-down areas, plant rooms, and external gullies, and where the drawings don't match what's actually there.

When water and flow testing is the right approach

You'll typically benefit from flow testing if you're seeing intermittent blockages that clear themselves and then return, slow-draining sinks, floor drains, or gullies, backing up during peak service or wash-down, flooding with no obvious structural collapse, odours that suggest poor flow or standing water, confusion about which area connects into which chamber, or suspected capacity issues after a refurbishment or change of use.

Flow testing is also a strong option when access for CCTV is limited, or when you need to confirm performance before committing to larger remedial work.

What water and flow testing can reveal

Water and flow testing can help identify partial restrictions caused by grease, scale, debris, or silt, poor gradients and low spots that hold water and solids, bottlenecks at junctions and chamber inverts, incorrect connectivity where a line discharges somewhere unexpected, surcharging and capacity limits during higher flow, and whether you're dealing with a maintenance issue, such as build-up, or a structural one, such as damage or poor installation.

For hospitality sites, it's often the fastest way to prove whether kitchen lines are coping with real-world loads.

Our water and flow testing process

We keep the process evidence-led and low on disruption.

1) Site review and symptom mapping

We confirm where the problem is being experienced, when it happens, such as peak times, wash-down, or heavy rain, and any recent changes like refurbishments, new equipment, or increased covers.

2) Access point checks

We inspect manholes and inspection chambers to understand flow direction and signs of surcharge, standing water or slow clearance, and grease or sludge patterns pointing to an upstream source.

3) Controlled water testing

We introduce water in a controlled way and observe how quickly it clears, where it backs up, and whether flow is consistent through the network. Where it helps, we can combine this with tracing methods to confirm where the water is travelling.

4) Targeted cleaning

If the testing points to a restriction, a targeted clean, such as jetting, may be recommended to restore flow and confirm whether the issue is purely build-up or something more.

5) CCTV survey

If flow testing suggests a structural defect or a persistent restriction, CCTV can confirm deformation, cracking, or displacement, root ingress, heavy scale or grease build-up, and connection issues at junctions.

6) Findings and next steps

You'll get clear outcomes, typically covering what the testing proved and what it ruled out, the likely root cause, recommended remedial work or maintenance action, and a plan to prevent it happening again.

Water and flow testing for hospitality and commercial kitchens

Commercial kitchens are one of the most common sources of recurring drainage issues, due to fat, oil, and grease, food solids, detergents and wash-down water, and high peak loads during service. Flow testing helps confirm whether the kitchen line is coping with demand, whether restrictions are forming in predictable locations, and whether your grease management measures are doing enough.

Water and flow testing for facilities management

For FM teams and property managers, flow testing supports evidence-led decision making with less reactive spend, faster diagnosis during incidents, better planning for remedial work and maintenance, and fewer tenant complaints and less downtime. It's especially valuable on multi-tenant sites where responsibility and connectivity can be unclear.
