Picote Milling

When a blockage is caused by something solid, like hardened scale, concrete, grout, a heavy root mass, or a long-standing restriction, standard jetting and rodding often won't shift it.

That's where Picote milling comes in.

ICE Drainage provides professional Picote drain milling across London and the Home Counties, helping commercial sites, hospitality venues, and facilities teams restore full flow where traditional methods fall short.

What is Picote milling?

Picote milling is a specialist drain cleaning method that uses a high-speed rotating tool, called a miller, to remove stubborn build-up from inside pipework.

It's commonly used to remove heavy scale and corrosion, rust build-up in cast iron pipework, concrete, grout, and construction debris, root masses and root ingress, and hardened deposits that are reducing the pipe's diameter.

The goal is to restore the pipe's full internal bore and improve drainage performance, without needing to dig it up.

When do you need Picote milling?

Picote milling is usually the right call when you've had repeat blockages in the same line, jetting clears the problem temporarily but it comes back quickly, a CCTV survey shows heavy scaling, root ingress, or a solid restriction, flow is poor across several outlets, or older pipework, especially cast iron, has significant build-up inside it.

If you're dealing with an urgent back-up or flooding, call 0203 870 1067 for emergency support.

Why Picote milling works when jetting doesn't

High-pressure water jetting is great for clearing soft blockages like fat, wipes, and sludge, but it can struggle with hardened restrictions.

Picote milling helps because it physically removes hardened material from the pipe wall, restores the pipe's diameter more effectively where build-up is heavy, improves flow long-term and cuts down on repeat call-outs, can be targeted precisely to the affected section, and is often a practical alternative to disruptive digging.

Used properly, it's a strong option for problem drains, especially on commercial sites.

Our Picote milling process

We tailor our approach to your pipe type, access, and how severe the restriction is.

1) Initial assessment

We gather details on the symptoms, the history, and what access points are available.

2) CCTV inspection

Where it's needed, we use CCTV to confirm what's causing the restriction, whether that's scale, roots, or concrete, exactly where it is and how far it extends, and the material and overall condition of the pipe.

3) Picote milling and controlled removal

We use specialist milling equipment to remove the restriction and restore flow.

4) Flush-through and verification

We flush the line through and confirm the improvement in performance.

5) Recommendations for long-term prevention

If the restriction was caused by a defect, like root ingress through a crack, we'll advise on next steps such as patch lining or repairs.

Picote milling for cast iron drains

Older cast iron systems can get badly restricted by corrosion scale and rust. Picote milling can remove thick internal corrosion, improve flow and cut down on blockages, and restore function without going straight to replacement, provided the pipe is in good enough condition.

If you've got older drainage infrastructure on a commercial site, this can be a cost-effective way to improve performance.

Picote milling for root ingress

Roots can form dense masses inside pipework, especially where joints have moved or the pipe has cracked. Picote milling removes heavy root growth thoroughly, restores the pipe's internal diameter, and reduces the risk of it blocking straight back up.

In most cases, the best long-term fix is milling combined with sealing the entry point, through repair or lining, to stop roots coming back.

Picote milling for concrete and grout restrictions

Concrete and grout in drains can set hard and create a stubborn restriction that catches debris. Picote milling breaks down and removes hardened deposits, restores flow where jetting alone isn't effective, and cuts down on the need for digging, where access allows.

If you suspect builders' waste has got into your drainage system, call 0203 870 1067.

Picote milling for commercial and hospitality sites

We regularly support hotels, pubs, bars, and restaurants, commercial kitchens, schools and public buildings, retail units and shopping centres, managed estates and property portfolios, and facilities management teams.

We understand the need to keep disruption low and your site running.

If you think you need Picote milling right now

Note the symptoms and how often the issue comes back, avoid repeated chemical treatments as they won't remove hardened restrictions, arrange a CCTV inspection if you don't have a recent one, reduce usage if water levels are rising, and call ICE Drainage on 0203 870 1067 for advice.

Picote Milling FAQs

Technologies used

wide?

Yes, our trained engineers offer Picote milling across the UK.

Can milling avoid the need to dig up my drain?

Yes, that's one of the main benefits, it clears the pipe from the inside without excavation.

Does milling damage the pipe?

No, it's designed to remove the obstruction while leaving the pipe itself intact.

Why would I need milling instead of jetting?

Milling is used when there's a hard obstruction, like concrete or heavy scale, that jetting can't clear on its own.

What is Picote milling?

It's a technique that uses a rotating cutting head to remove intrusions like roots, scale, or old repairs from inside a pipe.

On the day

How long does a milling job take?

Most jobs take a few hours, depending on the length of pipe and the obstruction.
