Blocked toilets in the middle of a busy weekend are every venue manager's nightmare. Guests complain, queues build, and the smell travels. You need a fix fast.

This guide sets out your emergency options, step by step.

Step 1: Stop the problem getting worse

Do these things first:

  • Close the affected toilets. Put out clear signs.
  • Tell staff not to flush. More flushing pushes more water onto the floor.
  • Switch off any taps feeding the affected area if water is overflowing.
  • Keep people away from any spill. Sewage is a health risk.

Don't pour bleach or drain chemicals down. They rarely clear the blockage and can make it harder and less safe to clear.

Step 2: Work out how big the problem is

Is it one toilet or the whole block? That tells you where the blockage sits.

  • One toilet blocked. The blockage is likely in the pan or the short pipe next to it. A plunger may help.
  • Several toilets or sinks slow. The blockage is probably in the main drain.
  • Sewage coming up in a floor drain or outside. The main line is blocked. This is an emergency.

If a plunger does nothing after a few tries, stop. Pushing harder can move the blockage somewhere worse.

Step 3: Know your emergency options

Option 1: Use a spare toilet block. If your venue has another set of toilets, point guests there.

Option 2: Hire portable toilets. This is a short-term fix while the drain is repaired. It keeps guests happy and your licence safe.

Option 3: Call an emergency drainage team. This is the only option that solves the real problem. Our service for blocked toilets, sinks and urinals clears the blockage using the right kit for the job, such as high-pressure water jetting for tougher blockages.

If a blocked drain keeps coming back, a CCTV blockage investigation finds the cause, such as a collapsed pipe, roots or build-up, so you can fix it for good.

Step 4: Call a team that works out of hours

Blockages don't wait for weekdays. Ask any company you ring:

  • Do you work evenings, weekends and bank holidays?
  • Can you work around the venue so trade carries on?
  • Will you tell me what caused it?
  • Will you give me a written report afterwards?

Our emergency drainage team is on call 24/7, 365 days a year, including bank holidays. Rated 4.9 on Google, and trusted by big names such as Amazon, the NHS, the BBC, Nando's and TfL.

We also offer out-of-hours drainage works and reactive drainage call-outs for venues and managed sites.

Common causes of blocked venue toilets

  • Wipes, nappy sacks and paper towels
  • Too much toilet paper
  • Sanitary products
  • Grease washed into shared drains from bars and kitchens
  • Tree roots or damaged pipes outside
  • A build-up that has been growing for months

How to stop it happening again

  • Put "bin it, don't flush it" signs in every cubicle
  • Provide bins in all cubicles
  • Check toilet drains before big events
  • Book regular cleaning and maintenance. See our commercial maintenance services
  • Keep our number saved and shared with your duty managers

If you manage several sites, our multi-site drainage contracts keep everything under one plan.
