French Drains vs Soakaways: Which Stops Your Garden Flooding?
If your garden turns into a swamp every time it rains, you've probably come across two common fixes: French drains and soakaways. Both deal with excess water, but they work in different ways, and picking the wrong one means the flooding just comes back.
The right choice usually comes down to where the water is coming from and where it needs to go. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons garden drainage fixes don't actually solve the problem.
Below, we'll cover how each option works, the pros and cons of both, and how to work out which one fits your garden.

What is a French drain?
A French drain is a trench filled with gravel, containing a perforated pipe, that collects and redirects water away from a specific area. It works by intercepting water as it flows across or through the ground and channelling it somewhere it can drain safely, usually to a soakaway, ditch or surface water drain.
French drains are best suited to:
- Redirecting water away from a specific problem area, like a path, patio or the base of a wall
- Managing water that's moving across the surface or just below it
- Long, linear drainage needs, such as along a boundary or beside a building
What is a soakaway?
A soakaway is an underground chamber, typically filled with rubble, crates or a purpose-built unit, that collects water and allows it to soak gradually into the surrounding soil. Rather than redirecting water elsewhere, it deals with it on-site by dispersing it into the ground.
Soakaways are best suited to:
- Dealing with water at a single collection point, such as the end of a French drain or a downpipe
- Properties with reasonably free-draining soil that can absorb water over time
- Reducing water runoff without needing to connect to a surface water drain
Comparing the two
| French Drain | Soakaway | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Collects and redirects water | Collects and disperses water into the ground |
| Best for | Linear problem areas, water crossing the surface | A single collection point for water to soak away |
| Soil requirements | Works with most soil types | Needs reasonably free-draining soil |
| Typical use | Alongside paths, patios, walls or boundaries | At the end of guttering, French drains or paved areas |
| Often used together | Yes — many gardens use both | Yes — often as the endpoint for a French drain |
In many gardens, the best solution isn't choosing one over the other, it's using both together. A French drain intercepts and redirects the water, and a soakaway gives it somewhere to actually go.
Which one does your garden need?
A few questions help narrow it down:
- Where is the water coming from? If it's flowing across the surface from a specific direction, a French drain is likely part of the answer
- Where would the water go once collected? If there's no natural drainage point nearby, you'll likely need a soakaway to disperse it
- What's your soil type? Heavy clay soil drains poorly and can limit how effective a soakaway is on its own
- Is the flooding isolated or widespread? A single problem area might just need a French drain and soakaway combination. Wider flooding may point to a bigger drainage issue worth assessing professionally
Getting it right the first time
Garden drainage fixes only work if they're sized and positioned correctly for your specific ground conditions. An undersized soakaway, or a French drain that redirects water to nowhere in particular, often just moves the flooding rather than solving it.
Our drainage installation service covers assessment, design and installation for French drains, soakaways and combined systems, tailored to your garden's actual drainage needs.
