Sonar drain tracing can pinpoint the exact location and depth of the drains on your property.

If you’re planning to build an extension, conservatory or garage, you need to know if there's drainage on your land and where it is to see if you need approval from the local authority. An accurate drainage plan is also critical to ensure architects and builders don’t damage the drains.

Sonar drain tracing works by placing a transmitter on the head of a CCTV drain camera which is then put into a drain, pipe or sewer. The transmitter will send out a sonar pulse which an engineer will follow using a receiver. This enables them to calculate the depth of the pipes, trace the pipework and locate the entire drainage system.

FAQs

The basics

Do I need my drains traced before building?

Yes, if you're planning an extension, conservatory or garage, you'll need to know where your drains are. This helps you get approval from the local authority and stops builders accidentally damaging pipes.

What is drain tracing?

Drain tracing is how we work out exactly where your pipes run and how deep they sit, using sonar equipment. It's especially useful if you're planning to build and need to know what's under the ground.

When is sonar drain tracing required?

Although CCTV drain surveys can give you plenty of information about your drainage system, such as the condition of the drains and the pipe size, it won't give you the location, nor depth of it.

This diagnostic test is especially important if we need to see what’s going on underground in delicate situations where one wrong move could make a bad situation worse.

Technologies used

How does sonar drain tracing work?

We fit a small transmitter to a CCTV camera and send it into your drain. The transmitter sends out a signal, and our engineer follows it with a receiver from above ground to map out exactly where your pipes run and how deep they are.

Estimates and charges

Will I be charged for the quote?

No, the quote is completely free with no obligation to book.

How much does drain tracing cost?

The cost depends on your site and how much pipework needs tracing. Get in touch and we'll give you a free, accurate quote.

Booking the Service

How do I book a drain tracing service?

Call us on 020 3376 4801 or email contactus@icedrainage.co.uk and we'll get you booked in, including out-of-hours if needed.

On the day

What should I expect during the survey?

Our engineer will send a transmitter through your drains and trace the signal from above ground. It's quick, doesn't involve digging, and gives you a clear picture of your pipework.

Customer care

What happens after the survey?

We'll explain exactly what we found and answer any questions you have. If you need further work, like repairs, we can help with that too.
